Wrathion is a password recovery tool developed at Faculty of Information Technology, Brno University of Technology. Rather than a ready-made product, Wrathion represents an experimental prototype primarily used for research and testing of new password recovery techniques. It is freely available under MIT license. If you wish to try Wrathion, see the download section.

Our tool is currently able recover passwords from different versions of encrypted ZIP archives, PDF, and Microsoft Word documents. However, we are now working on the implementation of new modules for another file formats (RAR, 7-Zip, etc.), more sophisticated password generators, and a distributed version of our tool.

Wrathion supports two modes of password recovery process: CPU-only, or GPU-accelerated mode, which is much faster. GPU kernels are written in OpenCL, and should work on all GPUs supporting OpenCL 1.2 or higher. However, for GPU-accelerated version, we highly recommend to use AMD cards, since Wrathion was optimized and tested for them. Running Wrathion on NVIDIA cards may be slower, or unreliable. Password recovery using Wrathion can be performed on multiple CPUs/GPUs at a time.

We intended our tool to support multiple OS. Wrathion was tested under Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, Microsoft Windows 8.1, and Microsoft Windows 10. For GPU-accelerated version, we highly recommend to use proprietary AMD Catalyst/Crimson driver.

The original version of Wrathion was created by Jan Schmied in 2014. Since that, further development was performed by Radek Hranický, and Vladimír Veselý under the ”Modern Tools for Detection and Mitigation of Cyber Criminality on the New Generation Internet” project, no. VG20102015022 granted by Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, and ”Research and application of advanced methods in ICT” project, no. FIT-S-14-2299 granted by Brno University of Technology.

Since Wrathion is an experimental prototype, you can only use it at your own risk. We will not be held in any way responsible for your decision. For using Wrathion we provide no support, or assistance.
